In keeping with the title's grotesque image of the human body, Bone Machine is obsessed with decay and mortality, the ease with which earthly existence can be destroyed. The arrangements are accordingly stripped of all excess flesh; the very few, often non-traditional instruments float in distinct separation over the clanking junkyard percussion that dominates the record. It's a chilling, primal sound made all the more otherworldly (or, perhaps, underworldly) by Waits' raspy falsetto and often-distorted roars and growls. Matching that evocative power is Waits' songwriting, which is arguably the most consistently focused it's ever been. Rich in strange and extraordinarily vivid imagery, many of Waits' tales and musings are spun against an imposing backdrop of apocalyptic natural fury, underlining the insignificance of his subjects and their universally impending doom. Death is seen as freedom for the spirit, an escape from the dread and suffering of life in this world -- which he paints as hellishly bleak, full of murder, suicide, and corruption. The chugging, oddly bouncy beats of the more uptempo numbers make them even more disturbing -- there's a detached nonchalance beneath the horrific visions. Even the narrator of the catchy, playful "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" seems hopeless in this context, but that song paves the way for the closer "That Feel," an ode to the endurance of the human soul (with ultimate survivor Keith Richards on harmony vocals). The more upbeat ending hardly dispels the cloud of doom hanging over the rest of Bone Machine, but it does give the listener a gentler escape from that terrifying sonic world. Hillbilly Bone $7.18 Hillbilly Bone feels like a stopgap between albums for Blake Shelton, but it's not. This “Six Pak” is a budget-priced, six-track EP featuring a smash single as the title track. Pal Trace Adkins helps out on both the cut and in the video. The format is Warner Bros' attempt to deal with growing customer dissatisfaction with the traditional full-length format; they will release a second part later in 2010. As for the music, it's a formula contemporary country chartmaker: highly compressed dual lead guitars, layered acoustic guitars, good-time honky tonk lyrics, and big rocking drums. It’s a good-natured dig at city folks, and you can’t help but like Shelton, no matter how many cliché’s he spews. A radio skit outro is the actual intro to “Kiss My Country Ass,” a pure "redneck-and-proud" anthem worthy of Hank Williams, Jr. at his most ornery. Were it not for the title, it would no doubt score as a single as well. Things get a bit slower and softer with four different kinds of “love” songs that follow. The first, “You’ll Always Be Beautiful,” is about the real thing; it’s among the more sensitive ballads on Shelton’s records. “Can’t Afford to Love You” is a humorous take on trying to find the right person in the wrong place. “Delilah” is a classic contemporary country betrayal number. The set’s final cut, “Almost Alright,” is a midtempo recovering-from-love narrative with a catchy chorus, an unusual use of steel drums, and a more complex rhythm pattern -- the idea for which was likely borrowed from Jimmy Buffett. Bone Island $10.38 Since the Working Title's brief major-label sojourn with Universal, which saw the album About-Face released on the Cause for Alarm imprint in 2006, the band has been reduced essentially to a solo project for singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist Joel Hamilton, who is joined by his producer, Jake Sinclair, on bass and Joe Morin on drums for the act's first full-length recording since About-Face, Bone Island. Hamilton has one of those whiny, nasal tenors (think Loudon Wainwright III, Perry Farrell, Adam Duritz) that he uses to put across introspective lyrics full of dissatisfaction and a sense of romantic betrayal. The narrator of the songs, usually lying in bed in a daze, worries he's become jaded due to a world of violence, adulterous lovers, and dishonesty. That's what one gets from reading the hand-printed lyric sheet set among Zachary Johnson's Ralph Steadman-like artwork in the CD booklet. On the disc, Hamilton's unhappiness, while still apparent, is set in dense pop/rock arrangements, the penetrating quality of his voice ameliorated by the echoey sheen in which Sinclair envelopes the album's sound. Morin, Hamilton writes in the annotations, "played the drums like crazy," and that's especially true in "Wolf," which has an instrumental track consisting almost entirely of percussion, and "Listen, Read, Decide," on which the drums rampage, dominating the song. If Morin isn't an official member of the Working Title, he deserves to be. Elsewhere, Hamilton calms down enough to duet with Stephanie Underhill on "Arms and Thighs," in which they are accompanied by Josh Koler's pedal steel, while "Someone Else," with its strummed acoustic guitar, has a folkish feel.
