"How is your novels have always vicars in them?"

The issue arose in the context of the Q and A after I gave an interview on my second novel, March, whose protagonist is a Minister of the Union Army during the war Preparedness. My first novel, Year of Wonders, was marked by a priest leads a rural village in Derbyshire through a year plague. My partner had no way of knowing, but the novel So I just finished, the People of the Book, has also been a priest in him. And a rabbi. And an imam. Just as the establishment of a joke in bad taste. I did not consciously write about religious people, and yet they kept appearing in my novels as uninvited guests at a party. I mumbled something to be attracted by stories of the past, when religious leaders seemed so great in people's lives, shaping destinies and to dictate behavior. But later I realized that response was unfortunately incomplete.

My life has been a large swing between attraction and repulsion of faith. Raised in a Catholic old, heady and sensuous Baroque style (incense, bells of the Angelus, lace scarves, beads of wax and stained glass, glittering starburst of the monstrance and the Litany of Mary, who taught me the metaphor - Lily of the Valley, Mystic Rose, Star of the Sea) that I felt the difference between what most before the prayers and how people around me lived: "To you we cry children of Eve. To thee do we send our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears "is a strange prayer for merry little schoolgirls growing up in the sun-drenched, hedonistic paradise that has been Sydney in early 1970. When I was a teenager I decided that it was a patriarchal plot to suppress women and to counteract the positive social changes, people who buy off with fairy tales about rewards in the other world, Instead of a decent life in it. And I hated religion so often so isolated from people in some gnarly knots Us and Them.

I was atheist. So why pray? Whenever I heard sirens and ambulances, the little attention balloon goes up: "Please to help them. "There is no recipient for this message, I knew it. Neither the nature of others:" Thanks for this - sun, landscape, flower, glass of good wine bread.

In 1984, I married a Jewish convert and his faith, he has not actually one, being an atheist even more strident me. Most people were baffled by my decision: "You do not believe in God, why did you do that? "God, I have explained, has nothing to do with it. It was about history. Since Judaism is passed through the maternal line (a fact that I admired for his head hard pragmatism and its feminist implications) there was no way I was going to be the end of a line of tradition that had through layoffs Roman, Babylonian exile, the Spanish Inquisition, Russian pogroms and the Holocaust. For a child who is not a Jew was, for me, the same as adding a greater loss to the toll of the Holocaust.

And I like the prayers: the mournful, melodic winding and hard consonants of Hebrew words that looked like a desert wind slamming against a goat hair tent. They are my kind of prayer for the most part, not noticing the good things in life, like bread and wine, the first crescent of the new moon, the dew on the grass in the morning. And I felt at comfortable with the fact that in the synagogue, which greet you is not a god, but a book.

Salman Rushdie once said that there is a God-shaped hole in modern life. I filled with prayers that go Wafting OFF homeless, and writing novels about people who believe in a way that remains mysterious, elusive and intriguing to me.
