How Are Pearls Cultivated through Human Intervention?
As pearls are created by living creatures, they are known as organic gems. Pearls start their survival as bits of grit or new particles that find their ways into the shells of mollusks which are certain kinds of oysters and clams. But with the changing time due to pollution and activities like over-fishing and oil drilling, the pearl-producing oyster beds have disappeared and pearls are being produced through artificial ways. This present piece states how are pearls cultivated through artificial ways.
Mollusks produce an inner shell layer composed of organic-inorganic materials and this inner shell layer is called nacre. This nacre is used for cultivating pearls. May a question as to how are pearls cultivated from nacre, may come to your mind. Nacre gives its brightness and pearly surface to any thing that is stuck fast in the mollusks and a pearl is formed. Nacre is also known as mother of pearl bead. A mother of pearl bead and a bit of mantle tissue, which is prepared up of living cells of another oyster, is positioned into the mollusk which surrounds the mother-of-pearl bead, decreasing the probability of the negative response of beads by the mollusk. A mother of pearl bead is preferred to any other irritant for creating a pearl because this has some chemical similarities, which are useful during drilling, with the pearl.
Pearls can be cultivated in sea water as well as in fresh water. Sea water pearls are round and are made from oysters whereas fresh water pearls are irregular in shape and mussels are used in cultivating them. Finally the surviving mussels and oysters which have marketable quality are harvested. The pearls are sorted according to their shape, size, color, luster and blemish. This is all about how are pearls cultivated through artificial methods by human intervention.
